SLS Centre

Home to the Cochrane Generals for over 20 years, The SLS Centre, at approximately 325,000 square feet, is one of the largest multi-use recreation facilities in Alberta and is widely used by the greater Cochrane community.

Facilities include four ice arenas, aquatic centre, curling centre, climbing wall, indoor turf, fitness centre, gymnasium, indoor track, gymnastics centre, high performance sports training facility, physiotherapy, junior hockey, food and beverage outlets, preschool, and many other physical and social well-being programs.

SLS Centre is a not-for-profit organization and a registered charity, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of active citizens and stakeholders in the community. The facilities are co-owned by the Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County.

Our organization operates as Spray Lake Sawmills Centre (“SLSC”), and is legally registered as Spray Lake Sawmills Recreation Park Society (“SLSRPS”).  SLSRPS is governed by a volunteer board of directors, who directly liaise with our CEO on a regular basis.  SLSRPS manages and operates two facilities (the SLSC location & Cochrane Arena) on behalf of its co-owners: The Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County.  SLSRPS is a registered charity and a non-profit organization, incorporated in 2001.  We have a team of ~150 incredible employees who are driven by our mission to support and connect with our community as an important "hub" in Cochrane, and serves over a million people through its' doors each year.

  • 2001 (Phase 1) - "Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre" opened its doors as a single rink (Totem 1) and concession.
  • 2004 (Phase 2) - A fieldhouse was added, including the turf, double gym, a running track, a third-party gymnastics centre, and a third-party fitness centre.
  • 2009 (Phase 3) - Two more arenas were added (Totem 2 & 3) and several multi-purpose rooms. Up to this point, SLSFSC facilities were primarily rented out and utilized by external organizations and user groups.
  • 2010 – SLSFSC started to develop and deliver its’ own fitness, sport, and recreational programming.
  • 2015 – SLSFSC formally took over the third-party fitness centre, and started to sell an all-inclusive membership.
  • 2017 (Phase 4) - The aquatic, curling and climbing centres were added, and the fitness centre was expanded.  The culture of the company truly began to change as the size of the building and staffing team effectively doubled in size.
  • 2020 – 2021 – SLSFSC was dramatically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in three (months-long) full-facility closures... followed by record-high membership numbers in 2022.
  • 2023 - Recognizing the evolution of the organization and that the facility plays a key role in the community beyond "sports and recreation", the building and the organization was rebranded "SLS Centre".

As part of the regular SLS Centre offerings today, visitors can take part in drop-in family or individual activities in all of our facilities, group fitness classes such as Zumba, Yoga, AquaFit, bootcamp, strength and spin classes, organized recreational sports such as shinny hockey, pickleball, curling, and other ice/gym/turf sports, registered aquatic programs such as swim lessons & clubs, kids/youth programs and camps... and more!  As of 2023, SLS Centre sees over a million people through it's doors on an annual basis.
