The Gens shut out the Airdrie Thunder, 4-0, in their season opener on the road Friday night.

The Cochrane Generals are one-and-one after their opening weekend of play in the HJHL.

On the road, the Gens shut out the Airdrie Thunder, 4-0, on Sept. 20 before suffering a 6-1 loss to the Coaldale Copperheads the following night.

Many first were had on the opening night at the Ron Ebbesen Arena.  Goalie Isaias Maddigan turned away 33 shots for his first shutout of the season. Max Waugh and Alexander Devnich scored their first goals in Gens uniforms.

Other goal scorers were James Quaife and Diago Coelho. Evan Sine had three assists and Evan Judge assisted on the other.

On Sept. 21, three of the Copperheads goals came on the powerplay in a much more physical game than the opening night. Cochrane racked up 22 minutes in penalties,10 more minutes than the Copperheads.

Rookie Evan Malcolm scored the Gens lone goal from Nathan Sherriffs and Jayden Barney.

RELATED STORIES

The Medicine Hat Cubs, Strathmore Wheatland Kings and Three Hill Thrashers are off to the strongest start in the HJHL.

The Medicine Hat Cubs took a 3-0 lead over the Bisons and held to win 3-2, then beat the Copperheads 3-2 in a shootout.

The Wheatland Kings shut out the Mountainview Colts, 2-0 in their opening game. On Sept. 21, they came back from a three-goal deficit to the tie the game with four seconds remaining to force overtime against the High River Flyers.  Eric Castro got the winner with his second goal of the game.

Lucas Billings scored unassisted with 46 seconds remaining in play to lift the Thrashers to a 3-2 win over the Rocky Rams on Sept. 20. In their home opener on Sept. 21, they beat the Ponoka Stampeders, 5-4. If this score in any indication, the Stampeders are looking to be a more competitive team this season after a rocky return to the league last year.

The Gens are back on the road this weekend. On Sept. 27, they're in Didsbury to face the north division Mountainview Colts. Saturday, it's south to Okotoks to face the HJHL defending champions, the Bisons. It came out to a shootout the next day against the Copperheads.

We don't see the Gens here until Oct. 11.
